South Africa’s Crooks Corner.

This is an extract from “A Game Ranger remembers” by Bruce Brydon.
A truely superb read.

Crooks Corner, a triangular piece of land between the Limpopo and
Lumbubu Rivers in Kruger National Parks North Eastern region.

Crooks Corner is at the intersection of the borders of 3 countries,
namely South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

It earned its name in the wild old days around the turn of the 19th
century. Actual border lines were even vaguer in the early days
than they are now and the frontiers men only paid heed to them if
there was some advantage to be gained. Thus certain of the early
residents found Crooks Corner a very convenient place to live.
Since the border beacon had a way of mysteriously moving from one
location to another depending on which countries police were
looking for the person concerned.

It also acheived notoriety in the late 1960 and 70’s when the area
on the Zimbabwean and Mozambique boarders were heavily land mined
causing terrible injuries to Elephant.
