The Three Oldest Surviving Pubs In Cape town.

The three oldest surviving pubs in Cape town are the Perseverance
Tavern in Buitenkant Street,

the Fireman’s Arms in Buitengracht Street,

and Forester’s Arms in Newlands.

Perseverance or “Persies” started out in 1808 as a place where
tired sailors could stay over, in the then”Slaves Walk”. It has
recently made the Pubs of the World list, and the Western Cape Pub
of the Year award.

Second oldest surviving pub is the Fireman’s Arms. It started its
long career in 1864, taking its name from the steamships stokers
who used to pop in for a pint. For years each regular had his own
personal inscribed mug, which now hang above the bar counter. One
entire wall is covered in ties, with the owner’s name inscribed.
Nowadays the honorary patrons are firemen, who donate helmets and
firejackets from all over the world.

Forester Arms or “Forries”, started out in May 1880 as a
watering-hole between Cape Town and Simons Town. It got its name
from the Newlands Forest, which has now been replaced by houses.
Forries is now a handy stopover for those coming from or going to
Newlands Stadium, or for ducking lectures at UCT during the week.

It also made the Guinness Book of Records for the most beer sold in
the Southern Hemisphere!

Blogger Barry: Not mentioned is the Perseverance has also the
oldest Grape Vine in its garden. A few years ago, it started to
expire because the patrons were pouring their beer around it – both
before and after drinking! The owneres very cleverly cut off a
decent shoot, got it growing again and replanted it – So it is
arguably still the oldest Vine in Cape Town.

The Fireman’s Arms via the current owner, Kevin Phelan and their
annual Golf Day, very generously sponsored my Guide-dogs training.
in 2007 Kevin kindly awarded The Freedom of Fireman’s Arms to
Vixen! (There is a framed photo of the 2 of us on one of the

Apart from the most scrumptious pizzzas and food in town, Fireman’s
Arms Golf Days still sponsor the training of Guide-dogs, Hospice
and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
