Some Mountain Passes of South Africa.

Blogger Barry: These points of interest were extracted from a book
written by Patrick Coin “A guide to SA Mountain Passes and Poorts”

Bains Kloof: completed 1853. In his opening speech, Andrew Geddes
Bain said “I would rather make another Bains Poort than make a
speech. I am nothing but a common highway man and only accustomed
to blasing and blasting.”

Hex River: The farm, Buffels Kraal then owned by Mr JH Meiring, is
a significant feature of the naming of this pass. His daughter,
Eliza was so beautiful that young men rode from afar to court her.
She could not decide. Her father told her to put them out of their
misery and choose one. So she told them she would look with favour
on the first one to bring her a rare red Disa which grew high up on
the Matroosberg. One took her seriously and was later found at the
foot of a cliff, dead with his neck broken – with a red Disa
clutched in his hand. Eliza went completely mad and became known
as the witch and was locked up. She later escaped in 1768 and
threw herself off the same precipice. Now they say, on moonlit
nights, you can see a strange mysterious white shape on a high
point of the Matroosberg.

Robinson to Montague; Kogmans Kloof was called after the Koluman
Koi Koi tribe which attacked the military outpost there in 1701.

Sir Lowreys Pass; The pass of the Eland by the bushman, knew it for
countless centuries before the 17th century. It was a game trail
and they knew it as Gramtoo- the pass of the Eland. Completed in
1830.

The town of Clarence was so named in honour of President Paul
Kruger who spent his last days in the villiage of Clarence in
Switzerland. It was founded in 1912, the same year the Titanic
sank. In the mountain above the town a Rock prominence is called
Titanic Rock because it looks like the titanic.
