More Phillip Tobias.

Barry: Dr. Phillip Tobias’s memoirs, “Into the past” moved me so
much, I recently re-read it again and discovered the following I’d
missed during a previous read.

The final cave visit was to La Scal. That superb subterranian art
gallery that had been discovered in September 1940 by 5 school boys
of Montinac, out walking with their dog. It disappeared. Their
cries and whistles elisited a faint underground barking. Finding
an opening like that of a rabbit warren, the boys widened it and
slid in one by one. As they lit matches, they found themselves in
a great cavern from the walls of which large beasts leapt at them
in the flickering light. Thus was La Scal discovered. With its
trotting ponies. Its falling horse. Its swimming Stags. Its
charging Bison. Its leaping Cow and its 5 metre bulls.

I noted in my journal that I have never been so deeply moved by
such a sight before.

(The cave had to be closed to the public in the 1950’s due to a
fungus infecting the paintings. Later it was cured and the
paintings were preserved. A replica cave and its contents was
later opened for the popular viewing public nearby)
